you pierce the darkness with your light;
powers of night cannot endure.
Jesus is the light of stars.
Jesus is the strength of life!
And he does for the world’s poor,
things beyond the world’s belief.
Make us poor through your great love,
Jesus, poor like you, we plead.
Make us weak – weak in your strength.
Show us mercy in our need.

If we ask God earnestly for his will to be done on this earth, for his nature to be shown in our work, for his rule to bring men to unity, justice and love – then our life will be a life of work. Faith without works is dead. Prayer without work is hypocrisy. Un¬less we live according to God’s kingdom, the Lord’s Prayer is a lie. Unless love within the community results in work and deed, our Tree of Life will wither and come under judgment.

He who would be born of God must be mindful of how Christ’s birth took place. All birth from God happens as it did with Christ. When the Word is heard and when it is received, then faith is sealed with the Holy Spirit. This spirit renews every person and makes us alive in God’s justice. We become a new creature, a new creation.

Through Mary’s simple faith she received the spirit and thus conceived Christ, and he was born of her. Those who want to be reborn must, like Mary, first hear the Word and then believe it. And then, in the humility of Jesus and of Mary, we must learn to occupy the most modest human place in loving, devoted, long-suffering and in the freedom of joy.
